About the venue
Federation Square is Melbourne's civic and cultural heart. Each year it plays host to more than 2,000 events, major cultural attractions and tourism experiences. It is home to an array of restaurants, bars and specialty stores. Since opening in 2002, more than 9 million people have visited the site each year, positioning it as one of the most popular attractions for interstate and international visitors, and a beloved meeting place for locals.
Focusing on sustainability, since 2007 Federation Square has saved approximately 52 million litres of water, increased its recycling by 33 percent and reduced energy consumption by nearly 1.4 million kilowatts. That means over the past three years, Federation Square's carbon footprint has reduced by almost 40 percent through new practices, efficiencies and the purchase of green energy. By closely collaborating with tenants, partners and public stakeholders, the precinct is on track to be carbon neutral by 2013.
